Florianópolis, the capital of the state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil, is mostly comprised of Santa Catarina Island, which is 54 km long. São José da Ponta Grossa Fortress

The São José da Ponta Grossa Fortress is located in the north of Santa Catarina Island, Florianópolis, approximately 25 kilometers from the city center. Strategically situated atop Ponta Grossa hill, framed by the beauty of the rocky coastline and the sand of Praia do Forte beach. This fortress formed the second vertex of the triangle of fire conceived by Brigadier José da Silva Paes. Its construction began in 1740. In 1765, to complete its defense on the eastern flank, the São Caetano Battery was built, located next to Jurerê Beach, about 200 meters from the fortress.
